Ohio General Assembly
Ohio's bicameral state legislature — the 99-member House and 33-member Senate. Republicans hold supermajorities in both chambers, a gap between the Statehouse and a statewide electorate that has voted for Reproductive Rights in Ohio and against gerrymandered maps.
Why it matters
The legislature writes state law, sets the budget, and has repeatedly clashed with ballot-measure majorities. Its supermajority is itself partly a product of Redistricting (Ohio) and Gerrymandering.
Connections
- The 2023 House Speaker fight — Derek Merrin lost to Jason Stephens, who won with Democratic votes — shaped the Republican caucus.
- Several 2026 statewide candidates came through it: Keith Faber (Senate President), Allison Russo (House Minority Leader), Robert Sprague, Jon Husted (House Speaker).
