Ohio Treasurer of State

Ohio's chief investment officer and custodian of state funds. The Treasurer receives, holds, and invests the state's money, manages the STAR Ohio local-government investment pool, and runs the General Revenue Fund and Lottery deferred-prize accounts. Four-year term, two-term limit.

What it controls

  • Investment of billions in state and pooled local funds; the safety-and-yield tradeoff on public money.
  • Custodial and banking duties for the state, plus debt-and-bond administration alongside other officials.

Why it matters

The office is lower-profile than elections or law enforcement, but it decides how public money is stewarded and is a common launchpad for higher office — outgoing Treasurer Robert Sprague is himself running for Secretary of State. The 2026 open race is Ohio 2026 Treasurer Race (Jay Edwards vs. Seth Walsh). See Economy and Material Stakes (Ohio).
