Ohio House District 17 2026

The marquee Cuyahoga County statehouse race — described as one of Ohio's most competitive legislative districts. HD-17 covers the western Cuyahoga suburbs (Brook Park, Fairview Park, Middleburg Heights, Rocky River, Strongsville) plus a slice of Cleveland.

The matchup

  • Republican: Mike Dovilla (incumbent).
  • Democratic: Megan Coy.
  • Election: November 3, 2026.

Why it matters

The Ohio House is a Republican supermajority, so one seat does not flip control — but HD-17 is the rare Cuyahoga district where the two parties genuinely compete. A Republican incumbent holding western-suburban turf in a heavily Democratic county makes this the county's real legislative fight, the Cleveland analog to Senate District 3 around Columbus.

Everything around it is lopsided: Cleveland-core House seats (18, 20, 22) are safe Democratic — one Republican withdrew, another district drew no Republican at all — while the suburbs hold the only contests. HD-23 (Troy) on the lakeshore is a secondary watch seat.
